Throughout October, designated as National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the department is running a series of events aimed at honoring victims and fostering greater understanding of the issue among residents.
As part of the awareness efforts, community members are encouraged to actively become a part of the conversation and remembrance. The Police Department has installed an interactive display where citizens can go to practically put forth names and tributes; people are invited to attach a ribbon or memorabilia onto the display to honor loved ones affected by domestic violence. The centerpiece of the month’s campaign is a candlelight vigil set for October 17, preceded by an awareness presentation—both hosted at the Law Enforcement Center on Holly Springs Road. Lieutenant Melissa Ottaway, as part of a statement provided to the Holly Springs website, stressed the significance of these events: “The Holly Springs Police Department wants to raise awareness about domestic violence and help in the fight to end the cycle of domestic violence in our community.” She further stated the ultimate goal: “This will lead to saving lives and helping combat common myths about domestic violence.”
