Authorities in West Memphis, Arkansas, are sorting through a disturbing discovery made along one of the city's major thoroughfares. Human remains were found yesterday afternoon on Interstate 40, a detail that has opened a new swath of mystery and initiated a state-level investigation. A report from WREG noted that the Arkansas State Police (ASP) confirmed the remains were located around 4:30 p.m. at the 280-mile marker of I-40.
The section of the interstate is known for its proximity to Martin Luther King Drive and various truck stops, making the find all the more concerning given the potential transient witnesses and a range of out-of-state travelers. As per details provided by Local Memphis, investigators have yet to disclose how the individual died or release any identifying information.
Yesterday's findings led to a substantial halt in traffic on I-40 eastbound at the I-55 split, a jam not resolved for several hours.
Further understanding of the case awaits the results of an autopsy scheduled at the Arkansas State Crime Lab, a step that may shed light on the victim's final hours. As FOX13 Memphis reported, it was not immediately clear who the person was or how they died.
