Illinois Attorney General Leads Coalition Demanding iDentidad Telecom Halt Suspected Illegal Robocall OperationsSource: Facebook/Identidad Technologies

Attorney General Kwame Raoul, alongside a coalition of attorneys general from across the states, has called out iDentidad Advertising Development LLC—or iDentidad Telecom—for their role in the spread of suspected illegal robocalls. These calls, often masquerading as legitimate communication from government offices, have become a widespread nuisance and a potential threat to consumer safety. Raoul's warning to the telecom company was bolstered by a parallel cease-and-desist letter from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), demanding an immediate halt to the questionable practices that have been flagged.

According to a press release from the Illinois Attorney General's office, iDentidad is accused of routing calls impersonating the Internal Revenue Service, the Social Security Administration, and other entities. These calls don't just stop at bothersome interruption, they represent a deeper insidious intention to deceive and extort the unsuspecting. Raoul's office underscored that no person is immune from having their phone numbers spoofed by bad actors, further emphasizing the gravity of this unscrupulous situation.

Should iDentidad fail to comply with the directive to cease the dissemination of these calls, the attorneys general are prepared to pursue legal action. This could include seeking damages, civil penalties, and injunctions to prevent further violations. The concerted effort of the Anti-Robocall Multistate Litigation Task Force, which Attorney General Raoul is part of, signifies an aggressive approach to curtail a problem that wreaks havoc on the telecom terrain.

To empower consumers against these tactics, Attorney General Raoul has shared tips to identify and avoid these scams. He cautions individuals against sharing personal information or complying with payment requests through unconventional means, such as gift cards or cryptocurrency—a method often favored by scammers. Additional advice includes a recommendation that consumers should immediately hang up and verify the legitimacy of unsolicited calls by contacting the purportedly calling agency directly through trusted channels.
