Illinois Governor JB Pritzker is set to lead a trade mission to Japan, bringing a varied group of professionals from the realms of business, education, and government. The focus of this trip is to discuss ties in clean energy, manufacturing, and other industries vital to the state's growth. The Illinois government announced the mission, aiming to enhance economic relations with Japan, mentioning partnerships in sectors such as quantum computing and life sciences.

"When I became Governor, I promised to be our state's best Chief Marketing Officer—sharing with any and all global partners that Illinois is the best place to live, work, and do business," Governor Pritzker stated. He's expected to not only showcase the region's successes but also to clearly articulate and make known his state's future ambitions. Speakers joining this effort include heavy hitters like Senate President Don Harmon and House Speaker Emanuel "Chris" Welch. Key figures in clean energy and quantum industries are also on the roster to join the mission.

According to the press release, Illinois' exports have enjoyed a marked increase since 2019, with a total of over $78.72 billion just last year. Japan stands as one of Illinois' top trading partners, the 8th largest export market to be precise. However, despite robust export growth, imports from Japan have seen a decline, dropping by 22.4% since 2019. This trade mission sets out to underscore existing relationships with Japan and potentially reverse the downward trend in imports.

In statements obtained by the Illinois government, Senate President Don Harmon emphasized the strategic significance of strengthening economic ties with Japan. Mark Denzler, President & CEO of the Illinois Manufacturers' Association, highlighted Japan's position as a key trading partner for Illinois and expressed support for the Governor's initiative to bolster investment while broadening global market reach for local manufacturers. "Illinois is a world-class leader in the clean energy revolution, quantum research, and manufacturing," Speaker Welch told the Illinois government, looking to leverage these strengths internationally.

Effecting economic collaboration, this delegation of influential figures will carry the baton of Illinois' progress and potential across the Pacific. The mission underscores the future-oriented dialogue and the potential of transnational partnerships, as remarked by members within the delegation, hailing from businesses such as PsiQuantum and Nexamp, who view international collaboration as key to innovation and sustainability. United Airlines President Brett Hart also praised the move, speaking to the importance of air links in underpinning commerce and connection between the two nations.
