After three weeks of assisting with hurricane rescue operations, Indiana Task Force 1 has returned to Indiana. The first responders, made up of teams from various locations in the state, traveled to Florida and North Carolina to help with the damage caused by Hurricanes Helene and Milton, according to WISH-TV.
Lindsay Mullis, whose husband is a Columbus firefighter and had previously been deployed for the Kentucky floods, found this deployment a tense reminder of past experiences. She expressed her children's longing for their father during this difficult time, saying, "They were upset about it because he had been deployed a few years ago because of the Kentucky floods, so my five-year-old knew daddy could be deployed for a couple weeks," in a statement obtained by WISH-TV.
Task force members Chelsea and Steven Spina, who spoke to WRTV, emphasized the community's support that helped sustain their home while they were deployed. Chelsea shared, "We really appreciate all our friends that rallied around us and helped with the kids while we were gone to make it possible for my husband and I to go out." Their daughter Abby spoke about the challenges and concerns they faced, admitting, "It was scary because they were going towards it and we were already home so you didn’t know what was going to happen."
Founded over thirty years ago, Indiana Task Force 1 has a history of responding to major events, including the September 11 attacks and various natural disasters, now adding Hurricanes Helene and Milton to its legacy. As reported by WTHR, during this latest deployment, the team was key in evacuating more than 300 Florida residents amid high winds and flooding. First-time task force member Michael Parker recounted his experience, saying, "First experience was great. Great people to work with. Seen a lot of things and it's all just getting processed right now."
