Travelers in Indianapolis are facing a detour as the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) begins a 16-day closure of I-65 southbound, starting tonight at 9 p.m. The stretch between West Street and Alabama Street is set for repairs that include bridge joint work and pothole patching. INDOT has recommended alternative routes via West Street to I-70 to traverse downtown or utilizing I-465 for circumnavigating the closure, as reported by WISH-TV.
Initially planned to commence on Friday, the start date was advanced to avoid a clash with a concert series by Taylor Swift, which is expected to bring an influx of visitors in November. INDOT's spokesperson, Kyleigh Cramer, conveyed the urgency of the situation, "We know that Taylor Swift is coming to Indianapolis," she said. "We are trying to get out of the way of those folks that are driving to Indianapolis for that Taylor Swift concert," according to a statement obtained by WISH-TV. In the event that crews stay on schedule, the interstate is set to reopen on Halloween.
The closure affects not only motorists but also the community surrounding Purdue University in Indianapolis, which is cautioned to exercise increased vigilance and safety during this period. With West Street running adjacent to the campus, an escalation of nearby traffic is anticipated, making it paramount for those around to plan accordingly. Pedestrians in particular are urged to adhere to traffic control measures and remain vigilant when crossing streets, especially around West Street, as reported by Purdue University’s newsroom.
The interstate shutdown will also include ramp closures, affecting several entrance and exit points along southbound I-65. With a Colts home game approaching and the National Future Farmers of America conference scheduled for October 23-26, the earlier start date for repairs could facilitate smoother traffic for attendees. FOX59 has provided a full list of the affected ramps.
