Following an extensive national search, the City of Mankato has announced the appointment of Jeremy Clifton as the new Director of Public Safety. Clifton brings to the role over a quarter-century of experience within the department, having previously taken on the duties of Police Officer, Instructor, Detective, and Commander. Before being elevated to this new position, he was fulfilling the responsibilities of Assistant Director of Operations.
Clifton's journey to the top has been marked by his steadfast dedication to his hometown and a professional approach to law enforcement that appears to both honor tradition and fully grasp the need to rigorously build upon trust and accountability in a climate that finds such virtues in short supply. In a statement released by the City of Mankato, City Manager Susan Arntz said, "His commitment to the community, the organization, and the team in both police and fire was evident throughout the recruitment process. At the same time, he understands the challenges in trust and accountability that face departments locally and nationwide, and the importance of building positive experiences and relationships across the community."
Clifton is also a local in terms of education, having graduated from Minnesota State University’s law enforcement program. His deep-rooted connections to Mankato may well serve to solidify a more authentic and informed approach to addressing the public safety concerns of the city's residents. The selection process attracted a diverse pool of candidates, put through the paces of several rounds of interviews with multiple internal and external panels, ultimately culminating in Clifton’s appointment.
Effective immediately, Clifton will assume his duties as Director of Public Safety. The city announced that Clifton's integration into this new role is expected to help strengthen ties with community members, aiming to inspire positive change and more effective public safety outcomes.
