Kevin Rued, the suspect in the tragic early-morning shooting on B Street back in May 2023, has received a life sentence without the possibility of parole after being convicted of 1st Degree Murder. According to the El Paso County Sheriff's Office, the sentence was delivered just one day following the guilty verdict on Tuesday.
El Paso County Sheriff Joseph Roybal weighed on the court's decision stating, as per El Paso County Sheriff's Office, "I thank my Investigations Division and the District Attorney’s Office for their persistence and dedication in holding this criminal accountable for his heinous, unjustifiable actions" and asserted the commitment of local law enforcement to the safety and justice for the community of El Paso County, how nothing can bring back the victim, Sylena Maldonado, the sheriff showed hope in the family finding solace in the judicial outcome.
On a fateful Sunday morning, May 28th, the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office received a startling 9-11 call around 3 am, which led deputies to the 2000 block of B Street where they encountered a critically injured female shooting victim. The victim was swiftly transported to a nearby hospital but ultimately, she succumbed to her injuries; her identity was officially released following confirmation by the El Paso County Coroner’s Office.
With the case developing rapidly, the sheriff's office detectives pieced together multiple scenes and leads that pointed them towards Rued as a person of interest, Kevin Rued was eventually apprehended by the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office SWAT Team on Fay Drive and he was brought in for questioning without any further incidents, he was then booked on charges including First Degree Murder (F1) and Felony Menacing (F5) amongst other related offenses, which cemented his role in the crime.
The sheriff's office also expressed gratitude to the Stratmoor Hills Fire Department for their indispensable assistance during the emergency response to the shooting incident, coupled with an assurance to the public that there was no ongoing threat to the community post-incident.
