U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers at the Laredo Port of Entry recently apprehended a U.S. citizen who was the subject of a felony warrant for assault causing bodily injury.
On Sunday, at the Juarez-Lincoln Bridge, Jesse Camacho, 34, was referred for secondary inspection by CBP officers, who, during a detailed examination discovered an active warrant for his arrest. The warrant, issued by the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office, was for assault - injury to a child/elderly/disabled with intent to inflict bodily injury. "Assault causing bodily injury is a serious offense," said Port Director Albert Flores, Laredo Port of Entry in a statement obtained by CBP's newsroom. He added, "The suspect who had been evading arrest was taken into custody without incident following a coordinated effort between CBP and state officials."
CBP officers leverage biometric verification tools and databases such as the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) to identify wanted individuals, just as they did in Camacho's case. NCIC, a central database shared among law enforcement agencies, lists outstanding warrants for a range of offenses from money laundering and homicide to sexual child abuse and military desertion.
Following verification of Camacho's identity and the warrant, he was transported to Webb County jail, where he will await criminal proceedings. While criminals charges such as those Camacho faces are merely allegations, defendants such as him are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
