In a firm stance against child sexual abuse, a Laredo man has been sentenced to a total of 420-month term of imprisonment for the production and possession of child pornography, which involved the sexual assault of a minor relative, as reported by the U.S. Attorney's Office; Aaron Hernandez, 25, had entered a guilty plea on May 29.

During the sentencing, U.S. District Judge Diana Saldaña imposed a significant prison term on Hernandez, and at the hearing, the anguish suffered by the victim's family was laid bare, with the victim’s father speaking to the deep hurt their child had to endure. Hernandez, self-reflecting during the proceedings, identified himself with terms such as a monster, an animal, and a pig, acknowledging the abhorrent nature of his crimes while the court pointed out the devastating impact his actions had on the lives of the victim and their family, according to a statement obtained by the U.S. Attorney's Office.

Investigations ensued after officials traced the sharing of child pornography to a WhatsApp account linked to Hernandez, with a consequent raid on his home on October 30, 2023, resulting in the seizure of his electronic devices which contained disturbing evidence of his criminal activities. Hernandez's devices held 11 videos and 10 pictures including child pornography out of which 11 captured his appalling acts of sexual assault on the minor relative.

Hernandez, who has been remanded and awaits transfer to federal prison, will also serve a subsequent 10 years on supervised release which includes numerous conditions designed to limit his access to children and the internet, furthermore, he is mandated to pay $3,000 in restitution to a known victim and register as a sex offender, emphasizing the stringent efforts to safeguard children from further harm and predation, "A home should be a sanctuary for every child, not a place where their innocence is exploited by those who are meant to protect it," U.S. Attorney Alamdar S. Hamdani reflected on the gravity of the crimes committed by Hernandez and affirmed the ongoing commitment to protect children and bring perpetrators to justice, the U.S. Attorney's Office reports.

This case is part of Project Safe Childhood (PSC), an initiative aimed at combating the epidemic of child exploitation and abuse, refined through the collaboration of federal, state, and local resources to locate and prosecute offenders while ensuring the identification and assistance of young victims, as conveyed by the Department of Justice's official PSC page.
