Las Cruces is marking a pivotal moment in tackling affordable housing with the upcoming groundbreaking of Peachtree Canyon Apartments. Slated to rise on the East Mesa, the 144-unit development, represents a strategic effort to alleviate the city's housing crunch. According to the City of Las Cruces, the ceremony is scheduled for 10 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 10, 2024, near Peachtree Hills and Jornada Road.
City officials are touting the project as a beacon of progress. "Together, we are building a brighter future and addressing the affordable housing needs of our community," Natalie Green, the City’s Housing and Neighborhood Revitalization Administrator said, as per the City of Las Cruces. Isidoro Hernandez, Housing New Mexico Executive Director/CEO, echoed this sentiment in his remarks on the anticipated impact of the project, "Peachtree Canyon is a much-needed development in Las Cruces, and we look forward to the moment families can call this community their home." He acknowledged the collaborative nature of the endeavor, extending appreciation to the partnering entities.
Peachtree Canyon Apartments owes its financial backbone, in part, to a $23 million General Obligation Bond that voters approved in 2022. The funding mosaic also includes contributions from various partners such as the New Mexico Housing and Community Development Corporation, the Thomas Development Group, the City of Las Cruces, the Housing New Mexico Mortgage Finance Authority, and Dona Ana County, rounding up a total development cost of $40,834,966. Construction is anticipated to kick off in November with a completion target set for January 2026.
The housing complex will feature a variety of unit types catering to different family sizes, with 72 one-bedroom units, 60 two-bedroom units, and 12 three-bedroom units. Planned amenities are designed to foster a sense of community and active living, from pickleball courts and a swimming pool to age-appropriate playgrounds and community building. The project is not just about putting roofs over heads, but also creating an environment conducive to the well-being of its future residents.
