The City of Las Cruces is seeking applications for its Oversight Committee, a group dedicated to fostering transparency and accountability in local governance. Those interested have until 5 p.m. on Nov. 7, to submit their applications, which can be found on the City’s website, as per City of Las Cruces.
The Oversight Committee was established in November 2018 by the City Council as a management advisory committee, not a public board. It's tasked with reviewing internal audit and inspector general activities to improve efficiency, and operations, and prevent misuse of government resources. Currently, all three committee positions are up for grabs and the city is actively looking for qualified residents to fill these roles.
According to the City of Las Cruces, the committee is particularly interested in applicants with specialized backgrounds, one should be versed in accounting, auditing, or inspector general work; another with experience in law enforcement or the legal field, and another with professional management or business expertise. Members serve staggered three-year terms and are expected to meet monthly, although additional meetings can be called if necessary.
This is a volunteer opportunity as members will not receive compensation for their service. Being on the Oversight Committee also precludes serving on other City boards, commissions, or task forces. With all three positions vacant, this marks a crucial time for civic-minded individuals to step up and assist the City in upholding its dedication to a transparent and accountable government.
