Two traffic incidents in Las Vegas on Monday raised concerns about safety around the Strip. One involved a pedestrian who was critically injured after being hit by an SUV, while the other was a speed-related crash during a police chase.
According to FOX5 Vegas, the pedestrian accident occurred around 1:38 p.m. at the intersection of Sahara Avenue and Palace Station Drive. A Chevrolet Suburban, making a lawful turn on a green light, collided with a 64-year-old man from New York, who was crossing "in or around" a marked crosswalk. The victim, currently in critical condition, was quickly transported to UMC Trauma.
The driver, who stayed with the injured pedestrian until medical personnel arrived, is not suspected of impairment. Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department's (LVMPD) Collision Investigation Section is looking into the details of this incident to determine the exact cause of the collision.
Later that evening, LVMPD responded to a vehicular crash incident involving a driver who allegedly lost control of their car while trying to avoid a traffic stop. The crash took place just before 9 p.m. at Sahara Avenue and Rancho Drive, according to News3LV. Initially, LVMPD suspected the car was stolen but later corrected the statement. The driver, whose condition has not been disclosed, was taken into custody post-crash.
The occurrence of two accidents on the same road within hours has raised concerns about traffic management and pedestrian safety in busy areas of Las Vegas. As investigations into both incidents continued, Eastbound Sahara Avenue experienced temporary closures, impacting traffic around the Palace Station area.
