The Līhu‘e Refuse Transfer Station, closed since September 11 for renovations, will reopen on Saturday, according to the Public Works Solid Waste Division. The renovations aim to enhance the facility's environmental standards, particularly regarding water quality and stormwater management.
As reported by Kauai's official government website, the Kapa‘a Refuse Transfer Station will close on the same day as Līhu‘e for renovations expected to last nine months. To assist Kapa‘a residents, the county will provide a temporary solution, allowing them to drop off bagged trash at the Kapa‘a Roads Baseyard on Kahau Road from Fridays to Sundays, 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. A detailed news release about the Kapa‘a Baseyard operations will be provided soon. While Līhu‘e RTS prepares to handle the region's waste again, some restrictions will be in place due to ongoing construction to ensure the safety of equipment and crew.
In the meantime, Kauai residents should be aware of the temporary changes to what the Līhu‘e station can accept. Construction and demolition debris, such as drywall, wood waste, and roofing materials, will not be accepted. Pallets must be cut into quarters before being dropped off. Trailers loaded with trash will also not be allowed. To reduce littering, bagged trash is preferred, and longer items should be cut into three-foot lengths.
Unaccepted items are not without an alternative destination. They can be transported directly to Kekaha Landfill or handled by a local waste hauler. For additional clarity on the matter and re-routing of trash that can't find a home at Līhu‘e, residents are encouraged to reach out to the Public Works Solid Waste Division. They can be reached by phone at 808-241-4841 or via email at [email protected] for any questions concerning the changes or additional waste management services.
