The Buckeye Police Department recently honored local hero Sergio for saving two people from a potential overdose. According to the City of Buckeye, Sergio, a QuikTrip employee on Miller Road, quickly jumped into action when he found two men overdosing in their vehicle at the gas pumps on July 26.

Officer R. Brown was the first to arrive at the scene and faced the challenge of handling the situation alone. Sergio's quick thinking and willingness to help were crucial. Without hesitation, Sergio followed Officer Brown's emergency procedures by laying the men on the ground and preparing to administer Narcan, with every second counting in the fight against opioid overdose.

Things intensified when Officer C. Carrico arrived and began CPR on one of the men, allowing Officer Brown to prepare the automated external defibrillator (AED), which was essential for the situation. While Carrico administered lifesaving compressions, Sergio was assigned to secure an additional dose of Narcan.

Officer Carrico praised Sergio's quick actions, noting, "I think it’s outstanding that a citizen took the time. The first thing people want to do is pull out their phones and record." She emphasized that many choose to observe rather than help, but Sergio defied this trend by taking action. Officer Brown also acknowledged Sergio's crucial role in resuscitating the two individuals, stating, "He was not afraid to step in and help us," as per the City of Buckeye website.

In recognition of his outstanding contribution during a critical moment, Buckeye Police Chief Bob Sanders welcomed Sergio to the police station and presented him with the Community Member Lifesaving Award. Both the Buckeye Police Department and Buckeye Fire and Medical Rescue expressed their gratitude for Sergio's actions.
