Businesses in Chicago's Deering area are on high alert after a series of early morning burglaries targeted local shops this October. The Chicago Police Department has issued a warning about these incidents, in which the perpetrator, arriving by bicycle, shattered windows or doors to gain entry and proceeded to steal money and safes. The alert pinpoints the burglaries as having occurred on the 3800 Block of South Archer Avenue and the 1300 Block of West 31st Street on October 7, 2024.
Local businesses are being urged by law enforcement to maintain vigilant security measures. Residential areas aren't the only places where a lit perimeter can act as a deterrent to unsolicited nighttime visitors. Lights could make all the difference in keeping these establishments safe, the police say. They also stress that any suspicious behavior should be reported immediately and that physical security measures like durable doors, and windows, and prompt repairs can prevent such crimes. Further advice includes securing any air conditioner units that could provide an easy access point.
Another key recommendation given by the CPD concerns surveillance footage, if available. Businesses are encouraged to preserve and duplicate any video evidence of the incident for the investigation. In the unfortunate event of becoming a victim, proprietors should avoid tampering with the crime scene and contact the police without delay. Additionally, if a witness is present, obtaining their contact details for the authorities can be instrumental in aiding the investigation.
In the meantime, the Chicago Police Department continues its efforts to track down the perpetrator. Equally important, is community cooperation, shop owners keeping a watchful eye, and adhering to the guidance provided. Further updates on these incidents and safety tips for local businesses will be disseminated as the situation develops.
