Early Saturday morning, tragedy unfolded at a Phoenix gas station when a man was fatally injured after being run over by a pickup truck amidst a reported gunfight, according to Phoenix police. In the fallout of an argument that escalated to violence, 35-year-old Kyle Dorman was struck and later succumbed to his injuries, as 12News reported.
Police responded to reports of a shooting around 1:15 a.m. at the intersection of 35th Avenue and Union Hills Drive. Upon their arrival, they discovered Dorman laying gravely wounded on the ground. He was quickly transported to a hospital, where, he was pronounced dead. Witnesses at the scene recounted that a gunfight had broken out outside the gas station prior to the man being struck by the vehicle. An air patrol unit later spotted a matching truck and police were able to detain several individuals from inside, as stated in a FOX 10 Phoenix report.
The incident began when the individuals in the pickup truck emerged from the convenience store and an altercation broke out with another group in the parking lot. Phoenix police indicated that the confrontation turned physical and escalated when a gun was drawn and shots were fired at the group near the pickup. The ensuing chaos saw Dorman, armed and allegedly pointing his gun at the vehicle, run over as the driver attempted to flee the scene.
Following an initial review of evidence, the driver of the pickup truck has been released from custody. "His self-defense claim is consistent with the evidence collected by investigators," the Phoenix Police Department conveyed to 12News. The investigation remains ongoing and charges could still be forthcoming. Post-incident, shots were fired at the truck as it drove away, fortunately, no one was hit.
