During a routine traffic stop that escalated, Medford Police arrested two individuals, one of whom was found in possession of an untraceable "ghost gun." The incident occurred yesterday when officers stopped a vehicle for driving the wrong way at Medford Square. A patrol sergeant on the scene observed a light on the vehicle typically associated with firearms, prompting a cautious approach that led to the discovery of the weapon and the arrests. According to a Facebook post by the Medford Police Department, a ghost gun lacks a serial number and can be assembled from kits or 3D printed, making it difficult to trace.
The incident unfolded quickly after officers requested the car's occupants to exit. Ignoring orders, the driver attempted escape, and amidst the chaos, a 17-year-old from Belmont was captured attempting to draw the ghost gun from his waistband. This struggle resulted in minor injuries to an officer on the scene. Charges against the teenager included possession of illegal firearm and ammunition, resisting arrest, and multiple vehicular violations. Meanwhile, 20-year-old Alex Paul, involved in the chase, faces charges related to resisting police orders and vehicle misconduct.
Medford Police confirmed the recovery of the firearm and the charges brought forth against the individuals involved. As per procedures, the 17-year-old suspect will have his arraignment at the Cambridge Juvenile Court, while Paul is expected to be arraigned today at Somerville District Court.
