In anticipation of Hurricane Milton, Mayor Daniella Levine Cava announced the opening of an evacuation center designed to assist residents of mobile homes who choose to seek safety. This measure, announced yesterday, aims to provide a secure location for those whose homes are at higher risk of damage due to their vulnerability, in comparison to traditional housing structures.
The evacuation center, located at the E. Darwin Fuchs Pavilion on 10901 Coral Way in Miami, is set to welcome residents starting at 10 a.m. today. It is equipped to house evacuees, and it is also a pet-friendly facility, ensuring that residents do not have to part with their pets in this time. Miami-Dade County urges those evacuating to bring essential items, a list of which has been provided, for their stay at the center.
A significant relief for those without personal transportation, Miami-Dade Transit has committed to providing assistance. As mentioned in a CBS News Miami report, residents in need can reach out to the 311 Contact Center to arrange their pick-up locations. The Contact Center has kindly extended its operational hours to accommodate the increased need, remaining open until 10 p.m. yesterday and from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. today.
Authorities encourage residents to first seek shelter with friends or family to help ease the demand on public resources. The initiative is a testament to the county's effort to prioritize the well-being of its citizens—people and pets—facing the storm's threat. For further details on transportation assistance, an update via the official Miami-Dade County Emergency Management post on X directs residents to call 311 for the necessary coordination.
