The Elmwood Correctional Campus in Milpitas has unveiled a novel Goodwill store initiative. The initiative aims to empower incarcerated women by endowing them with real-world retail skills. As the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office reports, the pioneering program sorts, trains, and employs women in various retail operations, such as warehousing, inventory, and logistics.

Under the auspices of the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office Restorative Services Division, the program is a three-part training series where women in custody gain essential job skills and manage the store's daily operations. According to Holly Child, Director of Restorative Services, "This program uplifts the women in our care, enhancing their wellbeing and restoring their dignity," per the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office.

As women approach their release dates, one of the standout aspects of the program avails them the chance to acquire clothing free of charge, equipping them to step back into society with confidence and a new set of proficiencies. "This program was designed to serve someone like me,” a participant told the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office. “I came in with nothing and now I'm able to leave with clothes and confidence."
