
Last Thursday, a car crash on Interstate 20 in downtown Atlanta claimed the life of a Morehouse College junior and left three individuals with non-life-threatening injuries. The incident, which occurred near the Windsor Street exit, involved a black Hyundai Sonata that abruptly veered off the roadway and rolled multiple times after striking a light pole and a guardrail, according to Atlanta police and FOX 5 Atlanta reports.
Officials have identified the student who died at the site of the crash as 20-year-old Jayden Mango, who was studying cinema, television, and emerging media studies at Morehouse, WSB Radio reported. Mango was known for his involvement within the Morehouse community and is remembered for his kind heart and commitment to storytelling. "Jayden's presence enriched the lives of everyone around him. He was passionate about storytelling and envisioned using his talents to uplift and educate others through the power of media. Beyond his academic pursuits, Jayden was admired for his generous spirit, quiet leadership, and unwavering commitment to the Morehouse ideals of excellence and brotherhood," officials stated in remembrance of the young man.
The incident, which happened around 2:01 a.m., resulted in the vehicle flipping over and landing upside down on the Windsor Street ramp. According to a preliminary investigation by Atlanta police, Mango was ejected from the passenger seat and pronounced dead on the scene. The driver and two other passengers, whose affiliations with Morehouse College were not immediately clear, were transported to Grady Memorial Hospital for treatment after sustaining non-life-threatening injuries.
Morehouse College is offering counseling services to students, faculty, and staff impacted by the accident. Those seeking support can make appointments by calling a dedicated number, as announced by the institution. In a statement to the Morehouse community, officials extended their condolences, saying, "On behalf of the Morehouse community, we extend our most heartfelt condolences to Jayden’s family, friends, classmates, and professors. The passing of such a bright, promising young man is deeply felt across our entire community. We ask that you keep his loved ones in your thoughts and prayers as they navigate this profound loss," according to WSB Radio. No details on funeral arrangements have been announced at the time.
As part of their ongoing effort, the Accident Investigations Unit is diligently working to determine the circumstances that led to the crash. Atlanta police continue their investigation, examining all potential factors including road conditions, vehicle performance, and driver behavior to establish the sequence of events that culminated in this fatal outcome.
