During an educational field trip yesterday afternoon, a Middle Tennessee State University student suffered a dramatic fall of approximately 80 feet into Snail Shell Cave. According to WSMV4, the incident in the Rockvale area prompted a swift response from Rutherford County fire and rescue services, along with Emergency Medical Services, around 3 p.m. The student, who was reportedly part of a student group on the trip, has not had their identity disclosed.
After the descent into the sinkhole near the mouth of the cave, multiple agencies joined forces to engage in high-stakes rescue efforts. The victim was located by Rutherford County Fire and Rescue (RCFR), with assistance from the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office and the Rutherford County Emergency Management Agency. "Additional RCFR companies arrived on the scene and began to set up a high-angle rope rescue operation to lower additional rescuers and hoist the victim out of the sinkhole," stated Rutherford County, as cited by WSMV4.
