Businesses within the Near West's 012th District are on high alert after a series of burglaries targeting their livelihood in the dead of night. According to police notice, several establishments on beats 1211, 1212, and 1234 experienced break-ins where the assailants shattered front glass doors to gain entry. Stolen items include safes, cash registers, money, and tobacco and vape products.
The burglaries occurred at the 200 block of North Kedzie Ave. on September 22, at 5:06 AM; the 1100 block of North Western Ave. on September 23, at 3:40 A.M.; the 1700 block of South Paulina St. on October 04, at 3:20 A.M.; and the 2600 block West Chicago Ave., also on October 4, but at 6:05 A.M. In all cases, the methods were strikingly similar, suggesting a coordinated effort by the perpetrators.
The suspects are described as a group of 3 to 5 males wearing face masks, dark hooded sweatshirts with blue jeans, and red and black gloves.
The Chicago Police Department is urging business owners to remain vigilant and take preventive measures against theft. Recommendations include being alert to suspicious behavior, ensuring surveillance systems are functional, removing cash from registers when closed, and securing valuable items in safes anchored to the building. In the unfortunate event of becoming a victim, business owners are advised not to touch anything and contact the police immediately. Furthermore, if a crime is in progress or witnessed, individuals should call 911 and provide as much detail as possible about the offenders, including any vehicle information.
