An off-duty deputy from the Bexar County Sheriff's Office was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated after being involved in a crash, officials reported. According to a statement obtained by hjgoose, Ayden Zavala, 21, was taken into custody by San Antonio police at approximately 2 a.m. on Sunday after he hit a parked vehicle and a light pole on East Commerce Street.
This incident marks Zavala as the seventh BCSO deputy to be arrested this year, and he is the second to face a DWI charge, as per a tally by KSAT. Zavala, who has been with Bexar County Sheriff's office since August 2021 and currently works in the Detention Bureau, has been issued a notice of intended dismissal. He was also placed on unpaid administrative leave pending the conclusion of the arrest.
The Bexar County Sheriff's Office is conducting an investigation into the matter that is separate from the San Antonio Police Department's criminal case. As reported by KSAT, a spokesperson for the Sheriff's Office indicated that the department is taking the necessary steps to hold the deputy accountable for his actions pending the outcome of the SAPD's criminal case.
The specific details of Zavala's arrest, such as blood alcohol content or the condition of the struck vehicle, were not immediately made available by either the BCSO or the SAPD's reports.
