On November 6, Councilwoman Nikki Nice will hold her last town hall meeting for Oklahoma City's Ward 7. As Nice transitions from city hall to the Oklahoma State Capitol, her constituents will have the opportunity to engage in dialogue pertaining to ongoing and upcoming initiatives, including enhancements to the critical NE 23rd Street corridor and the transformative NE Renaissance project, according to the OKC government website.
Having played a pivotal role in shaping the ward since 2018, Councilwoman Nice's tenure in local government witnessed her becoming both the tenth woman and second woman of color to grace City Hall's chambers since its inception in 1890, an emblematic note in the narrative of progress within Oklahoma City's political landscape, she was elected to represent Oklahoma’s Senate District 48 earlier this year and will assume her new responsibilities on November 13. "Please join me for my last town hall as the Ward 7 councilperson," Councilwoman Nice said in a statement, “This town hall will focus on projects that are in the works in Northeast Oklahoma City and the Ward. Representing Ward 7 has been the honor of my lifetime, and I look forward to continuing my service at the State Capitol,” as per the OKC government website.
The councilwoman's departure from city politics brings with it a time for reflection on the progression of Ward 7; a sector of Oklahoma City that not only encompasses the northeast but stretches its bounds into the southeast and northwest quadrants of the city. Amid Nice's leadership, projects like the Innovation Hub/Foster Center, Clara Luper Civil Rights Center, and East End Commercial District became more than mere concepts but beacons of community development, and such topics are likely to be discussed during the upcoming town hall.
Elected unopposed in 2021 after her first win in 2018, Councilwoman Nice has made a significant impact on her community. She has worked on important projects like the Alpha Community Foundation and the Vision Zero initiative, which aims to eliminate deadly crashes in OKC.
