Oklahoma City is starting Saturday clear and around 79 degrees, but the quick morning warmup is headed toward another dangerous day of summer heat. Temperatures are expected to reach 102 degrees, with heat index values as high as 108 as a Heat Advisory remains in effect through Sunday evening.
Saturday Brings Full Sun And Dangerous Heat
The National Weather Service forecast calls for sunny skies and south-southwest winds around 13 mph Saturday, with gusts reaching 20 mph. Temperatures should climb through the 90s around midday before topping out near 102 during the afternoon.
The advisory covers Oklahoma City and much of central Oklahoma until 7 p.m. Sunday, with heat index values potentially reaching 109. The National Weather Service in Norman advises residents to drink plenty of fluids, stay in air conditioning when possible, avoid prolonged sun exposure and check on relatives and neighbors who may be especially vulnerable.
Sunday Offers Little Relief
Sunday could be even hotter, with a high near 103 and heat index values again reaching about 108. A slight chance of showers arrives after 1 p.m., followed by a small chance of thunderstorms later in the afternoon and evening, but the rain odds remain only around 20%.
Any storm that develops could bring a brief downpour or gusty winds, but scattered rain is not expected to provide a reliable break from the heat. Sunday night should turn partly cloudy with a low near 77 and another slight chance of showers or thunderstorms.
Brief Dip Before The Heat Builds Again
Monday should be somewhat less oppressive, with mostly sunny skies and a high near 99 after a slight early-morning storm chance. That small dip will not last long: temperatures are forecast to rebound to 104 on Tuesday and remain near 104 Wednesday under sunny skies.
Thursday and Friday look slightly cooler, with highs near 98 and 99, respectively, but the week ahead still offers very little genuine relief. Overnight lows will mostly stay in the upper 70s or lower 80s, limiting the chance for homes, pavement and bodies to cool down fully.
Cooling Off Safely In OKC
Residents planning outdoor work, exercise or weekend events should move strenuous activities to the morning or evening, take frequent breaks and never leave children, older adults or pets in parked vehicles. The City of Oklahoma City maintains extreme-heat resources that include cooling-center information and guidance on recognizing heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
