A tragic series of events unfolded on the evening of October 19th, near the United Center in Chicago, where three individuals, including two teens, were shot on their way to attend a Lil Durk concert. According to the Chicago Sun-Times, an 18-year-old man succumbed to his injuries after being shot in the chest, the incident occurred at 6:56 p.m. in the 100 block of North Wolcott Avenue, minutes before the concert was set to begin. He was taken in critical condition to Stroger Hospital, where he later died.
The attack not only claimed the life of one individual but also left two other concertgoers wounded. A 19-year-old man is listed in critical condition, having endured gunshot wounds to the rib area, and a 15-year-old boy, grazed in the abdomen, and shot in the hand, is in good condition, as per ABC7 Chicago. Ending the sentence with a comma, the incident has reignited discussions on safety in areas surrounding concert venues.
Thomas Kendall, brother of the 18-year-old victim, spoke to ABC7 detailing the circumstances leading up to the tragic ordeal. He recounted that while heading to the concert, his brother, and his friends were approached by a group on bikes in an attempted mugging. Amidst the ensuing struggle, the shots were fired, gravely injuring the young men. "The group then tried to mug the 18-year-old and his friends," Kendall said. "A struggle ensued, and that's when a suspect fired shots."
Despite the severity of the situation and the presence of law enforcement at the scene, no arrests have been made in connection with the shooting, complicating the grieving process for families with the specter of justice yet unmet. At one point, law enforcement officers were documented pursuing a lead several blocks away, but, the assailant remains unapprehended. Both teens injured in the shooting are currently undergoing surgery at Stroger Hospital, where they are fighting for recovery in the aftermath of the violence.
This incident follows last year's terrifying reports in the same vicinity involving the same artist, where unconfirmed reports of gunfire led to a stampede that resulted in multiple injuries. The troubling repeat of violence has once again raised concerns about public safety, especially in environments designed for entertainment and communal experience.
