An Oregon man has been convicted on charges of kidnapping and sexually assaulting two women in separate incidents, and for holding one of them in a makeshift cell built from cinder blocks. Negasi Zuberi, was found guilty on all counts by a federal jury last Friday, OregonLive reports. The verdict comes after a trial that uncovered details of the abductions which occurred within a two-month span last year.

Detailed in the court proceedings, prosecutors outlined how Zuberi kidnapped the women, both 21 years of age, from Klamath Falls. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jeffrey S. Sweet, who spearheaded the prosecution, pressed the jury by stating, "He violated their bodies. He violated their freedom and he violated the law. Hold him accountable," as obtained by OregonLive.

Moreover, the charges against Zuberi expanded to include transportation for criminal sexual activity, possession of firearms and ammunition by a felon, and attempted escape, according to information detailed by KOIN. Back in February of this year, the grand jury indicted him on these additional counts, signaling an extensive range of crimes connected to his actions.

The sequence of Zuberi’s captures started with a police standoff in Reno, Nevada, where he was apprehended following the kidnapping incident. A victim from an earlier kidnapping in May 2023, recalled seeing cinder blocks in Zuberi's garage, which were later configured into a cell for imprisoning another victim, KGW reports. At the time of the second abduction, Zuberi was already facing allegations linked to the first.

Currently, Zuberi awaits sentencing scheduled for January 16, 2025, facing the possibility of life imprisonment for the federal kidnapping charges alone. The other convictions could add an additional decade or more behind bars for each charge, which could extend his time in prison considerably, as federal kidnapping charges bring severe penal implications.
