Peoria City Hall Set for a Green Makeover, New Grass-Focused Plaza Design Wins Public VoteSource: City of Peoria

Peoria residents have spoken, and the front yard of their City Hall is set to get a facelift — one that's both functional and green. A public survey circling for a month, drawing in 224 participants, has laid out a clear winner for the future of the municipal complex's outdoor space. The design for the new entry plaza, bagging 60% of the votes, features a grassy oval complete with a berm and a modest stage.

It's a project on the move since crews took to dismantle the old fountain structure before 2023 was out. According to the City of Peoria, the City Council has greenlit $2.4 million in capital funds to make sure this vision comes to life. They're not just hoping to visually upgrade, but to to actively follow through on their sustainability promises. The new grassy front will be balanced out by uprooting non-programmable grass areas elsewhere, keeping the environment in mind.

The plaza's redesign isn't purely about aesthetics, though. It has an eye toward practicality, with engineers currently exploring ways to relocate ADA parking to improve accessibility right up by the City Hall's front doors, as per the City of Peoria. It's a move to open up the lawn — to make it a place where everyone in the community can enjoy the space with equal ease.

With the design contract steps away from being finalized, we’re looking at a construction go-ahead come summer 2025, just after current re-roofing and weatherization efforts at the Hall wrap-up.
