Chaos unfolded in the south suburbs of Chicago when Riverdale police officers engaged in a pursuit of a stolen vehicle that resulted in a police-involved shooting, as reported by CBS News Chicago and ABC7 Chicago. The incident began around 12:15 p.m. on Sunday when officers attempted a traffic stop but found themselves chasing the fleeing vehicle onto a sidewalk, initiating a desperate attempt to escape that led to a collision and the car getting pinned at 146th and Halsted streets.
According to police reports, an officer was threatened by a front-seat passenger of the stolen car, who raised a gun towards them. The confrontation led to shots being fired by an officer from another vehicle. As the shots were fired, multiple suspects fled from the vehicle into Harvey, resulting in the immediate apprehension of two individuals. The search for the remaining suspects involved a Cook County helicopter, an Illinois State Police airplane, several K-9 units, and outside agencies.
Pursuing their investigation into the shooting, authorities have pieced together certain clues. Two firearms were recovered from the scene: one handgun equipped with a high-capacity magazine, the other a modified automatic handgun. In a developing part of the narrative, Riverdale police were informed of an individual checked into a local hospital, bearing injuries "consistent with" the incident who may have been involved in the affair, as stated by authorities.
Throughout the encounter and subsequent manhunt, no law enforcement personnel suffered harm. As the case unfolds, both Riverdale police detectives and the Illinois State Police Public Integrity Unit are investigating to unravel the events of Sunday's tumult.
