The Powell community is in mourning following the discovery of a 13-year-old girl's body on a local trail, with a 15-year-old boy facing charges in connection with her death. Both minors’ identities are being withheld to respect the grieving family and due to legal protections. According to WVLT, the boy was charged with second-degree murder yesterday night, about four hours after the body was found.
Multiple local news outlets are covering the Broadacres subdivision, where Knox County Sheriff Tom Spangler reported that the body was found off Cranley Road by two individuals. This location is near Powell High School, making it a place frequently used by children, which complicates the morning routines of many families. In a press conference reported by WBIR, Sheriff Spangler spoke about the emotional toll on both the victim's family and the officers involved: “To unexpectedly have someone show up at your doorstep and tell you something so tragic. It's tough on that family, but it's tough on those individuals as well.”
Investigations are ongoing as the Knox County Sheriff's Office's Major Crimes Division and Juvenile Crimes Unit look for additional leads that could lead to further charges.
