In an effort to confront weight stigma head-on, Ramsey County has taken an innovative step with the announcement of a countywide survey meant to gather information and shape a new initiative. This survey, a part of the Size Inclusive Ramsey County (SIRC) initiative, is calling for participants to share their experiences related to body size, aiming to foster a local environment of acceptance and understanding.

The SIRC initiative, an undertaking of the Statewide Health Improvement Partnership (SHIP), seeks to hear from a diverse pool of voices from the community. Targeting people who live, work, or receive healthcare in Ramsey County, including adults of all sizes over the age of 18, the county intends to tailor its efforts in reducing weight stigma within healthcare facilities, workplaces, and elsewhere in the community. However, it’s an all-call for input, and Ramsey County staff although welcomed to participate, won't be eligible for the incentives provided for survey completers.

The survey, which is available in English, Hmoob, Español, and Soomaali, will take approximately 15 to 25 minutes to finish and remains strictly anonymous. As a token of appreciation for taking the time to contribute, participants have a shot at winning one of ten $50 gift cards.

Understanding the roots and ramifications of weight discrimination can lead to the development of more effective programs and policies, which is why SIRC is dedicated to addressing the issue through education and systemic change. Anyone interested in taking part in the survey can find it on the Ramsey County website. For those who need assistance or require the survey in a different language, they are encouraged to reach out through email to the SIRC team.
