Two individuals are in custody following what escalated into an action-packed evening in Greater Grand Crossing, where the carjacking of a rideshare driver sparked a high-speed pursuit involving multiple law enforcement agencies. The incident, which could easily have turned into a tragic narrative, thankfully left no one injured, yet it raises serious concerns about the vulnerability of gig economy workers.

As reported by the Chicago Sun-Times, the 47-year-old driver was forced out of his 2017 Dodge Journey at gunpoint around 10:40 p.m. after dropping off the passengers on the 7400 block of South Wabash Avenue. The suspect then fled the scene in his vehicle. A dramatic chase ensued, featuring Illinois State Police and a police helicopter, which eventually concluded with the suspects' capture in the 9200 block of South Greenwood Avenue, in Burnside.

ABC 7 Chicago adds that the rideshare driver, a 39-year-old man, was unharmed during the confrontation. Illinois State Police, initially working on a crime suppression detail, quickly located the carjacked vehicle. They attempted a traffic stop but were led on a chase before the suspects were apprehended. Further details regarding the operation have not been disclosed.

One of the suspects, a 17-year-old boy, has been charged with one count of vehicular hijacking.
