A Rolla man with a previous conviction for sexual abuse involving a child has been sentenced to 190 months in prison on charges related to child pornography. Torrey Jaymes McAlpin, 37, faced U.S. District Judge Henry E. Autrey who handed down the sentence on Wednesday, which will be followed by a lifetime of supervised release once McAlpin completes his term.

According to a press release from the U.S. Attorney's Office, the social media platform Kik reported a CyberTip to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children about a user, later identified as McAlpin, uploading child sexual abuse material. The discovery led to charges upon which McAlpin would eventually plead guilty, admitting to possession of such materials and not registering as a sex offender.

The investigation also found that McAlpin had sent multiple images and videos containing child sexual abuse material to other Kik users in June of 2021. This was not McAlpin’s first run-in with the law; previously, he was convicted of first-degree sexual abuse involving a child in Kentucky in 2013 and was found guilty of failing to register as a sex offender in Tennessee in 2018.

The case was probed jointly by the Phelps County Sheriff’s Department and Homeland Security Investigations. McAlpin was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Nathan Chapman. The sentencing marks another achievement for Project Safe Childhood, a robust nationwide initiative launched in 2006 to address the escalating problem of child sexual exploitation and abuse.
