A Tesla dashcam captured the startling moment when concrete began to crumble from the top of the Roseville railyard underpass, dropping debris onto the roadway below. The incident, according to CBS News Sacramento, occurred Thursday afternoon on the northbound lanes of Washington Boulevard, causing immediate road closures in the area by local authorities.
As the urgent situation unfolded, the Roseville Police Department hastily closed Washington Boulevard in both directions between Main Street and Oak Street, participating drivers in the sudden disruption. Jeff Cerone, the driver of the Tesla, relayed to CBS News Sacramento his initial confusion, "I didn't know what was falling at first, but after I exited the tunnel and saw the train passing above, I figured it had something to do with the bridge's structural integrity."
FOX40 confirmed that a vehicle was hit by the falling concrete, with the driver opting for a hospital visit as a precaution, no major injuries were reported. After a review by engineers from the City of Roseville and Union Pacific Railroad, it was declared that the bridge remains structurally sound and fit for usage.
The City of Roseville and Union Pacific, the operators of the overpass, are now working collaboratively on assessing the damage and planning the necessary repairs, with Union Pacific stating, "The rail structure has been inspected twice this year, per federal guidelines, and is safe for rail traffic," as reported by FOX40. Scott Alvord, a member of the Roseville City Council, communicated through Facebook that a safety net was placed beneath the affected section to catch other pieces in case off the bridge, ensuring further safety measures are already in place.
