The City of San Diego is stepping up its game with transparent climate action, launching a new Climate Dashboard to let citizens watch the city's environmental goals. Paired with the Climate Action Plan (CAP) annual report, the climate dashboard demonstrates San Diego's modest advances in reducing greenhouse gases. It overviews the city's broader ambitions to tackle climate change.

Engagement is key, and to that end, San Diego’s new Climate Dashboard is designed to make the progress easily trackable for city residents. As described by Heather Werner, Interim Director of the City’s Sustainability and Mobility Department, as per the City of San Diego, the dashboard is “a tremendous tool which enables us to systematically report and make our climate data public” and stands as “accessible to everyone,” touting the thoroughness of San Diego’s ambitious plan.

With a sweeping goal of reaching net-zero greenhouse gases by 2035, the updated CAP sets San Diego on a steadfast path toward sustainability. The CAP comprises various strategies, such as decarbonizing built environments, amplifying access to renewable energy, and revamping mobility. It aims not only to meet but exceed its environmental targets and become a global standard-bearer for other cities.

San Diego is taking confident strides towards this sustainable vision, recently earning the title of the most environmentally sustainable city in the United States by WalletHub as per the annual report noted. Casting a wide net of initiatives, including enhanced bicycle infrastructure and additional public electric vehicle charging stations, the city is leading with more than just innovative policies. As the City’s Chief Sustainability Officer, Shelby Rust Buso, told the City of San Diego, “The goals in our updated CAP underscore our unwavering commitment to creating a sustainable, equitable and resilient future for our city.”
