San Diego's law enforcement has received a technological boost through the Smart Streetlight and Automated License Plate Reader (ALPR) technology, which has become central to solving crimes in the city. Since their reintroduction by Mayor Todd Gloria and the San Diego City Council last year, these tools have been integral in assisting the San Diego Police Department (SDPD) with numerous criminal investigations, as reported by the City of San Diego news release.
According to the city's press release, the technology has played a pivotal role in 229 criminal cases in 2024 alone, resulting in 166 arrests. Notably, a double attempted kidnapping near Mission Valley Mall saw the ALPR technology swiftly aiding in locating and arresting the suspect. "The results speak for themselves," Mayor Todd Gloria stated. "Smart Streetlights and ALPR technology have proven to be essential tools for our police officers, helping to quickly identify suspects and solve crimes."
The Smart Streetlight system has also been instrumental in addressing a series of armed robberies and was vital to ensuring the safe return of an elderly missing man. These technologies were relaunched the previous year under the new privacy-oriented Transparent and Responsible Use of Surveillance Technology (TRUST) Ordinance. This legislation was implemented to ensure transparency in deploying and handling the acquired data.
Due to difficulties installing Smart Streetlights, the SDPD plans to ask the City Council for permission to move them more easily. This request is in response to barriers that make the cameras less effective. The City Council will consider this later this year. You can now see all the installed locations on a map on the SDPD’s Technology website.
