Over the weekend, a carjacking in San Mateo led to the arrest of a San Francisco man thanks to the collaborative efforts of local law enforcement. Last Saturday evening, the San Mateo Police Department responded to a carjacking report on the 100 block of E. 3rd Ave. According to the San Mateo Police Department police report, the victim was forcibly pulled from his vehicle and assaulted, and the car was stolen while he lay on the ground.
The suspect, identified as Maurice Powell, age 53, didn't manage to evade police for long. Soon after the incident, a countywide “be on the lookout” bulletin led to the sighting of the stolen vehicle in San Bruno. San Mateo officers, with assistance from the San Bruno Police Department, conducted a traffic stop and arrested Powell. Upon searching the suspect, officers found he was carrying a bag of psilocybin mushrooms.
No firearm was discovered on Powell or in the vehicle, despite the victim's belief that he was attacked with one. Powell faces serious legal charges; he was issued a citation for possession of a controlled substance, specified as a violation of 11350(a) HS, and was booked into the San Mateo County Jail on the charge of carjacking, a violation of 215(a) PC as per the official release.
