In the wake of mounting apprehensions over potential school closures and the San Francisco Unified School District's (SFUSD) dire financial straits, Mayor London Breed has taken a decisive step by putting together a School Stabilization Team, as reported by Hoodline. This new team comprises seasoned experts from various city departments. It aims to chart a course through the SFUSD's financial turbulence while ensuring the well-being of the city’s students and educators.
Co-led by Maria Su of the Department of Children, Youth, and their Families and Phil Ginsburg of the Recreation and Parks Department, the Stabilization Team is tasked with applying their collective knowledge in child and family programming to address the School District's predicaments, the composition of the team is also fortified by the experience of Dr. Carl Cohn, a veteran in California's educational system who joins as a special advisor providing strategic insights for the District. Mayor Breed has underlined the criticality of maintaining local control over the schools to prevent a state takeover, underscoring her administration's determination to deliver quality education akin to what she experienced as a young student in San Francisco.
Adding to these strategic efforts, Mayor Breed has channeled $8.4 million from unallocated Student Success Funds to meet the immediate requirements of the school community, in a move that mirrors her hands-on approach to the situation, adding to the depth of this commitment, Breed has expressed, "Hardworking staff at the District office are doing incredibly difficult work to avoid a state takeover," which she highlighted in a London Breed X post, emphasizing the importance of focused and competent management, especially in realms as sensitive as education and fiscal stewardship.
