In a recent operation highlighting technology's role in search and rescue, two hikers who lost their way on the coast near Devil's Slide were located and aided by San Mateo County Sheriff's deputies. Last Saturday evening, after receiving a call around 9 p.m., deputies sprung into action, contacting the pair, who still had cell service despite their predicament.
Confronted with the darkness and the hikers' remote location, the deputies opted to deploy a drone, affirming the department's commitment to leverage modern resources for community safety. After launching the Unmanned Aircraft System, it wasn't long before the drone pinpointed the location of the startled but unharmed hikers near the Green Valley – San Pedro Mountain Trail.
Deputies made their way by foot to the hikers and assisted them back to safety. The incident was shared on social media, with the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office Facebook page detailing the event and underscoring the hikers' fortunate condition upon being found "healthy, but shaken up a bit."
