Following a multi-week investigation, San Mateo police have placed 42-year-old resident Sione Laulea under arrest for an array of gun-related felonies. According to a statement released by the San Mateo Police Department, the inquiry began on September 26 when an employee of a local business discovered an unattended bag with a loaded, unregistered pistol.
By examining video footage from the area near South Norfolk Street and Fashion Island Boulevard, officers could identify Laulea as the individual who left the bag at the scene. The investigation further revealed that Laulea is a convicted felon and is barred from possessing firearms. An arrest warrant and a search warrant for Laulea's residence were issued.
Last Thursday, San Mateo police officers found Laulea driving the same white Kia previously spotted on the surveillance footage. They safely conducted a traffic stop on Highway 101 and took Laulea into custody. A subsequent search of his residence led to the discovery of an AK-47-style assault rifle, additional ammunition, a bulletproof vest, and firearm accessories.
Laulea now faces several charges, including the possession of an assault weapon and body armor by a violent felon. Following the arrest, the police are urging community members to be vigilant and to report any crimes or dubious activities they might witness. "Trust your instincts. See Something, Say Something," the San Mateo Police Department emphasized. Charged offenses are serious and include violations of codes such as 29800(a)(1), 30305(a)(1), and 30605(a) of the Penal Code, among others.
