State Route 89A in Oak Creek Canyon, known for its picturesque switchbacks north of Sedona, is finally free of construction cones and restrictions. The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) recently announced the completion of essential rockfall mitigation work in the area. Commuters and sightseers alike can now fully traverse the improved highway without delays.
This announcement follows a series of projects aimed at increasing the safety of the roadway. According to ADOT, the work was initiated in response to a rockslide in March 2023. Since then, a commendable effort has been made to clear loose material and stabilize a critical cliff face. Prior traffic restrictions south of the SR 89A Oak Creek Vista scenic overlook have been lifted.
Additional improvements by ADOT included the reinforcement of the SR 89A Pumphouse Wash Bridge near the switchbacks and the introduction of an erosion and sediment control project. The latter will presumably mitigate the damage that storm runoff can inflict on the roadway. The construction contracts for these three vital projects had a combined value of $11.1 million, a significant investment towards public safety and infrastructure resilience.
During the improvement period, ADOT was reported to have worked closely with local and regional safety agencies. Collaboration ensured that emergency vehicle access remained intact and enabled preparedness for various response scenarios, which could include wildfires. These proactive measures highlight a commitment to safety and foresight in infrastructure planning. For travelers seeking real-time highway conditions, resources are available on ADOT's Arizona Traveler Information site at az511.gov, through the az511 app, or by dialing 511, at any hour of the day.
