The City of Seattle is forging ahead with plans to redevelop the historic Fort Lawton and transform it into a multi-faceted community space. According to the City of Seattle, an article published today, the 34-acre site located in the Magnolia neighborhood is set to include supportive housing, affordable homes, and expansive park facilities.
To address homelessness and provide affordable living spaces, the city aims to boost the number of homes at the site from 237 to as many as 500. This redevelopment, keen on aiding homeless veterans, low-income families, and seniors, also intends to preserve public park areas. Inviting public comment on the plan, the Seattle Office of Housing runs a SEIS to understand the potential environmental impacts, including air quality and biological resources.
Seattle residents are urged to lend their voices to the cause by participating in the public engagement sessions scheduled for this month. In-person attendees can share their thoughts on Thursday, October 10, 2024, at the Daybreak Star Cultural Center from 6 to 8 p.m. Those preferring a virtual setup can register for the Tuesday, October 15 meeting from 10 to 11:00 a.m.
The City of Seattle offers alternative means to contribute to those who cannot attend these meetings. "You can email your suggestions and comments to [email protected] or send them by mail to Jessica Gomez at the Office of Housing," the announcement details. The city stresses the importance of public input in ensuring the redeveloped Fort Lawton aligns with the community’s vision.
