The San Francisco Police Department has taken to social media to alert residents of a deceptive scheme sweeping through the city. These fraudsters are duping people over the phone by pretending to be officers, claiming that victims have unpaid warrants or are implicated in crimes, and urging them to cough up money to resolve these fabricated issues. According to an official SFPD social media post, scammers are skillfully spoofing SFPD phone numbers to appear legitimate. However, the police department has clarified that they would never solicit payments through cold calls.

We are aware of recent reports of scammers contacting residents claiming they have outstanding warrants or have committed crimes and must pay a fine. These scammers use tools to display an SFPD number on your caller ID. This is a SCAM, we DO NOT make cold calls or… pic.twitter.com/UHsU3foT4v
The SFPD insists that true law enforcement processes do not involve random cash demands over the phone and encourages everyone to be skeptical of anonymous callers asking for any form of payment to settle supposed legal troubles or requesting personal details. Such calls should be considered a red flag, and recipients are advised to terminate the conversation immediately without imparting any personal information. SFPD’s alert detailed the scammer's tactic of manipulating the caller ID to display an SFPD number to gain and exploit the recipient's trust.
Residents encountering such fraudulent calls are instructed to hang up promptly and avoid engaging the scammer. Providing them with personal information only serves their deceptive purposes, heightening the risk of identity theft and financial loss. The San Francisco Police have urged the community to report suspicious activities to their non-emergency line.
