A tragic incident unfolded on Interstate 35 this past weekend as a Shawnee man lost his life in a vehicular accident near Guthrie. The Oklahoma Highway Patrol reported that on Sunday just after 9 a.m., 70-year-old David Irving Smith was behind the wheel of a 2022 Freightliner Cascadia when it veered off the roadway and collided with a stationary 2002 International MA025. Guthrie News Page detailed that the crash happened near mile marker 156 on the northbound side of the highway.
Emergency services responded to the scene where Smith was pronounced dead by medical professionals the aftermath of the crash has prompted investigations into the cause with emphasis on why Smith’s vehicle left its intended path, FOX 25 Oklahoma City reported that investigators are looking into the possibility that Smith failed to maintain his lane leading up to the moment of the collision.
Subsequent to the accident, Smith's body was transferred to the Medical Examiner’s Office in Oklahoma City to undergo further examination. After the scene was secured and preliminary investigations completed traffic flow was restored on that section of the Interstate, according to a note from News 9.
The authorities have not released additional information concerning the circumstances surrounding the incident.
