Early morning turmoil in the northern part of the city was the backdrop on October 5, as District 4 police officers were summoned to the scene of a shooting. The incident unfolded around 6:30 a.m. in the 1500 block of N. 1st, according to the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department.
A woman alerted the officers to an abandoned bus/train depot at Cass and 1st, which has become home to a transient community. Inside, they found a 33-year-old man suffering from a gunshot wound. Despite the pain, he was in, the man refused to offer any details about what had transpired and asked for medical help.
The victim was transported to a local hospital by EMS and is currently reported to be in stable condition. The site -- a makeshift shelter of sorts -- was populated by numerous individuals in tents, yet none reported witnessing the incident or hearing gunshots prior to the man’s arrival at the depot, seeking help.
As police continue to investigate, the origin of the shooting remains a mystery. No physical scene of the incident could be identified.
