St. Paul, Minnesota, celebrated a new emblem of state pride with the dedication of a towering loon sculpture at Allianz Field, the home of Minnesota United FC. The steel artwork, known as 'The Calling,' is the creation of artist Andy Scott and weighs a hefty 25 tons. This significant installation stands as a beacon of community and state identity, inspired by the loon, an iconic figure in Minnesota's culture.
Funded by the Minnesota Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund, the unveiling of the sculpture saw a gathering of local leaders, including Senator Foung Hawj (DFL-St. Paul), who played a crucial role in supporting the arts initiative. Despite the loon being known for its solitary calls across northern lakes, the event reflected a sense of togetherness and collaboration. "I am delighted to have joined local leaders for the dedication of 'The Calling'," Senator Hawj said, as mentioned in a Senate DFL release. "This sculpture will awe and inspire countless visitors to take pride in our state and Minnesota United FC for years to come."
The ceremony, which took place on Thursday, was not just a showcase of the new installation but also a reflection of political cooperation. It featured Senator Sandy Pappas (DFL-St. Paul), Representatives Kaohly Vang Her (DFL-St. Paul), Leon Lillie (DFL-North St. Paul), Ethan Cha (DFL-Woodbury), and St. Paul Mayor Melvin Carter among others.
Local enthusiasts and soccer fans alike are expected to be drawn to Allianz Field's sculpture park, much like the loon is drawn to the still waters of Minnesota's wilderness, to view the inspiring steel structure that seems poised to take flight. Joining local officials was Minnesota United team owner Dr. Bill McGuire, expressing his support for the addition that symbolizes unity and ambition.
