Drivers in the Surprise area can anticipate improvements on US 60/Grand Avenue and Loop 303. The Maricopa Association of Governments (MAG) Regional Council has approved over $4 million in funding to enhance traffic flow and reduce congestion at key intersections. This funding will primarily focus on the US 60/Loop 303 interchange and the intersection at US 60 and 163rd Avenue, as outlined in a press release from the City of Surprise website.
With an earlier allocation of $4.5 million approved by the Arizona State Legislature in 2023, these upgrades aim to address the growing population and resulting traffic congestion. The latest funding comes from the Proposition 400 Freeway Life Cycle Program, supported by Maricopa County's sales tax. MAG is working in coordination with the City of Surprise, the City of Peoria, Maricopa County, and the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) to identify and implement necessary improvements.
Infrastructure improvements are being complemented by community engagement. MAG and ADOT have connected with residents through several events, including an open house that attracted 175 attendees on August 14. Surprise Mayor Skip Hall expressed the urgency of addressing the congestion, saying, “These approved next phase interim improvements will help reduce the delay at both the 163rd intersection and the Loop 303 traffic interchange,” as reported by the City of Surprise.
The proposed enhancements aim to improve vehicle movement and include widening lanes at the 163rd Avenue intersection, extending the southbound Loop 303 on-ramp, and adding deceleration and acceleration lanes. These changes are expected to reduce travel delays for drivers. However, the increasing population will require policymakers and planners to remain attentive to future demands on the transportation network, as indicated by MAG’s ongoing corridor study.
