In a brief issued on Saturday, the Salt Lake City Police Department reported the arrest of Farshad Hassan-Pouri, accused of the fatal downtown shooting that resulted in the death of a 30-year-old man. Hassan-Pouri, 49, now faces charges of murder and felony discharge of a firearm resulting in serious bodily injury.
According to SLCPD, the incident unfolded at around 12:18 p.m. on Saturday near 200 South State Street, with SLC911 receiving multiple calls regarding the shooting. According to the police report, officers discovered the victim with multiple gunshot wounds behind 185 South State Street. Despite urgent lifesaving attempts by both civilians and emergency responders, the man perished on the scene.
Witness accounts were critical to the apprehension process, as they tailed Hassan-Pouri post-incident, enabling officers to take him into custody near 200 East 300 South. The police found him carrying a firearm at the time of the arrest. "Detectives learned a verbal argument occurred between Hassan-Pouri and the victim," as stated by SLCPD. The specifics of this dispute are still under examination.
As part of their investigation, the Salt Lake City Police Department’s Homicide Squad is actively piecing together the evidence. The department's Crime Lab and Evidence Unit were dispatched to the scene in support of this cause, methodically working to collect and process physical proofs. In keeping with the protocol, the victim's identity is withheld pending notification of next of kin.
While charges have been levied against Hassan-Pouri, it is emphasized that these remain allegations and should not eclipse the suspect's presumption of innocence until, and unless, they are substantiated by the courts. The release of booking photos in Utah is regulated by state law, which generally restricts access to them until after a conviction is secured or under specific circumstances delineated by law enforcement.
