The City of Tacoma is taking a strategic step forward by merging four of its offices into a new integrated one within the City Manager’s Office. The move will amalgamate the expertise from the Office of Strategy, Office of Environmental Policy and Sustainability, Office of Equity and Human Rights, and Government Relations Office.

With this structural shift, the city aims to create a unified vision for Tacoma's future, advance its commitment to equity and sustainability, and strengthen ties with governmental partners. "This integrated approach reflects our focus on working collaboratively to achieve our shared goals," City Manager Elizabeth Pauli shared. "By aligning these crucial functions, we can better leverage resources to create tangible benefits for our community." The city isn't just talking, though—plans are already in motion for strategic oversight of human rights and fair housing programs, areas where Tacoma asserts its unwavering attention, according to an announcement made by the City of Tacoma.

In orchestrating this change, Tacoma has appointed Sonja Hallum as Deputy City Manager to lead the merged team. Hallum’s depth of experience and leadership was singled out for praise, with Pauli remarking, "Deputy City Manager Hallum’s exceptional experience and leadership will be invaluable in guiding this integrated approach," as per the city announcement. Jacques Colon will continue in his role as Chief Strategy Officer while also serving as Interim Chief Equity Officer, and Kristin Lynett is stepping into the role of Chief Sustainability Officer.

While the official name of the newly integrated department is still pending, the timeline and further details about the transition will be released in the future. Tacoma residents and stakeholders are being assured of a smooth transition with open lines of communication. This comprehensive approach is set to reinforce Tacoma's strategic initiatives and enhance office synergies as it unfolds over the next year. "To ensure the prioritization of this important work, the City of Tacoma will monitor and report on its progress in the coming year," the city announcement states. Additionally, the city promises to provide recommendations for structuring programs that will secure the longevity of its initiatives.
